The Institute for Independent Journalists and its affiliates (hereinafter, “IIJ,” or “we,” “our,” or “us.”) designed this Privacy Policy to demonstrate our commitment to protecting your information when using our website or any online tool and services affiliated with it. Please note that this Privacy Policy should be read in conjunction with our Terms of Use. By utilizing our website and other affiliations, you consent to your information, whether collected, stored, or shared, by us under the Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with the terms of this Privacy Policy, please do not use this Website. 

How Information Is Collected

The information that we collect is used only to further advance our mission of inclusion in journalism as well as emotional and financial stability for independent journalists. Any information we collect is with consent and is acknowledged by our members and visitors. We may collect personal information about you when you register and/or communicate with the IIJ website or any other affiliated sites, purchase event registrations, donate, or attend our conferences. We may also utilize your personal information in the aggregate for marketing, researching, and fundraising, and may share this aggregated information with third parties who are only limited to this purpose or similar purposes. 

  • For General Users. IIJ does not collect personal information from browsing its websites, only basic aggregate data – like your website browsing patterns, number of hits per page, etc. – to gain insights on how to tailor our websites to improve customer satisfaction and needs. Aggregate data is only used for marketing purposes and will NOT collect any personal information. 

  • For Members, Conference Registrators, and Other Stakeholders. To access our members-only resources and features, users are asked to voluntarily log in and provide some information such as legal full name, email address, and mailing address. Other personal, demographic, and professional information may also be requested. 

Email Services

  • Please note that by signing up for our IIJ newsletter, and other forms of email communication, or providing your personal contact information, you agree to have your contact information saved by our email provider and contact databases. IIJ only uses this information to enhance communication and distribution, so we may best identify the needs of our customers. 

  • We may also use your contact information to notify you of information that we think you may be interested in attending, including annual conferences, podcasts, and webinars. If you change your mind or do not wish to receive a newsletter or other communications, please unsubscribe at https://theiij.substack.com/. Please note that changes to your preferences will not be effective immediately. 

Do We Disclose Any Information to Outsiders?

  • As mentioned before, any information will only be shared with trusted third parties who contribute to the operation of our website, services, and conduct of our business, and these parties consent to keep your information confidential under the standard business privacy laws. However, without your consent, we will NOT disclose, sell, trade, or transfer private information to outside parties. 

  • We will only release your information under reasonable security measures and/or law enforcement to ensure the protection of our or other’s rights, property, or safety. 

  • In deciding to provide personal information, you should be aware of the general risk of transmitting information over the Internet. IIJ attempts to prevent unauthorized users from accessing your information or tampering with our Website, but we cannot guarantee that these efforts will always be successful. The IIJ will not be liable for the disclosure of personal information due to errors in transmission or unauthorized acts of third parties. 

Age Restraints

  • This Website may only be used for individuals over the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect data from individuals under the age of 18. However, if a parent learns about their child sharing personal information on this Website, please contact us and we will remove the information from our database. 

  • Any changes in our Privacy Policy will be immediately notified to all users. Additionally, the information will be updated on this page as well. Your continued use of this Website following any changes will constitute your acceptance of such changes.
